Instead of remaking the cult sci fi thriller 12 Monkeys as a feature film, Syfy is moving forward with a TV series based on the property.

Original producers of the 1995 cult hit Charles Roven and Richard Suckle brought the project to the network, with Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett serving as writers.

The original movie followed a convicted criminal in a post-apocalyptic future where the Earth's population is forced to live underground after a deadly virus. In a bid to earn a pardon, he uses an imperfect science of time travel to help collect information on the virus released by the Army of the Twelve Monkeys.

Jon Cassar will direct the 90-minute pilot, which will lead directly into a series if it is picked up. The pilot is already written, with the rest of the first season being mapped out.

No story details were released. The episode order will be short, with between 6 to 10 episodes in the first season.
