Vanishing Point: According to Variety, Scott Free Entertainment and 20th Century Fox are remaking the road-trip pic Vanishing Point, with video/commercials director Samuel Bayer behind the wheel. Paul Bernbaum has been set to write the script.
The 1971 original revolved around a maverick's bet that he could drive from Denver to San Francisco in just 15 hours in a supercharged 1970 Dodge Challenger.
In making the transition from video to features, Bayer has taken the slow lane, with Vanishing Point marking his directorial debut. He broke in with Michael Bay and David Fincher and is best known for the Nirvana music video "Smells Like Teen Spirit." He has worked with the Rolling Stones, Metallica, Aerosmith and Lenny Kravitz.
"My course has been different from Bay and Fincher with features, but I don't regret the wait," Bayer said. "I wanted to be passionate about the material and didn't want to be hired because I am a video/commercial guy who can do pretty visuals.
" 'Vanishing Point' is the right one for me, a cult movie that made a comment on what America was in 1970. I want to contemporize it, use the same car, the great landscape visuals and subtext, and then raise the stakes with stunts and car chases that will be visceral and not rely on computer-generated trickery."
