One of 22 Jump Street's best jokes was saved for the end credit sequence, where we got to see a number of posters for upcoming fake sequels. The gag ran all the way up through 2121 Jump Street, and included Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum as Schmidt and Jenko infiltrating every possible type of school before embarking on a space adventure. It was a bold way to end the second film, as it clearly hindered whatever was being planned for 23 Jump Street. But now, directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller are claming that all 22 of these proposed sequels are canon.
While its obvious that they aren't going to make every sequel teased at the end of 22 Jump Street, the duo claim to have found an interesting way to incorporate all of them, with the main story of 23 Jump Street something not seen in any of those posters. Topless Robot caught up with the guys at WonderCon, where they were promoting The Last Man on Earth. The claim to have big plans for their sequel, saying:
"We've found a way that we love that makes those imagined sequels canonical and yet does something that we haven't told you about yet. The sequels are canon."
Chris Miller and Phil Lord are producing 23 Jump Street, but have yet to be confirmed as directors. It has been rumored that this next sequel will crossover with Men in Black, but that has not been confirmed, and it isn't known if this is part of the plan they recently spoke of. Rodney Rothman is writing the screenplay. About that, the producers said in an earlier interview:
"[Rothman] had a really outrageous idea for what to do, and how we could take our scorched-earth sequel policy from the end of 22 Jump Street and do something that hadn't been explored in those 22 sequels and simultaneously tell the next chapter in the story."
What they truly have planned is anybody's guess. The crossover idea would work well in setting up a new storyline for 23 Jump Street, but we don't know if that is happening with this third movie or later on in the franchise's run.
