28 Days Later writer Alex Garland believes that making a third movie in the franchise is “possible” and has revealed that he has a “really cool” and “much bigger” idea for another sequel would go. Speaking with Kevin Polowy of Yahoo Entertainment, Garland, whose next movie Men is due to be released later this month, revealed that he and 28 Days Later director Danny Boyle do often discuss the potential of a third installment, but he hasn’t found the motivation to move forward with it. Not yet, anyway.

"It's possible. It's one of those things ... Everybody needs to want to do it and, every now and then, partly because I think about paying off my mortgage or something like that, I think, 'Hmm, that would be a good idea.' But then, me personally, never quite have enough motivation to follow it through."

A 28 Days Later sequel (which would presumably be titled 28 Months Later or something that effect) would need to cover a lot of ground since the release of the last movie, 28 Weeks Later, came out way back in 2007. Garland went on to reveal that he does have an idea for a third outing, and while he kept the details close to his chest, just the fact he has an idea that he thinks would be worthy is more than enough for now.

"I have got a really cool idea for it, but it's a much bigger movie, and one of the things about 28 Days Later is that it was small and punk and this idea is less small and punk. But me and Danny speak about it. Every couple of years it will come up, or going, 'Do you want to do that?' and then for some reason it never happens."

Though it has yet to happen, Garland’s revelation that he and Boyle have had discussions and that he has an idea is certainly promising and suggests that audiences could be sitting down to watch 28 Months Later at some point in the future. But, as Garland admits, it would be difficult, if not impossible, to capture the same level of impact as the first movie.

"A long time has passed and 28 Days Later, when it arrived [it was] fresh, and I don't think it's fresh anymore," the filmmaker pointed out. "I think it actually, speaking of conversations, 28 Days Later joined the zombie conversation, that genre. It did its thing, which is great. It was nice to be part of that, really."

28 Days Later Star Cillian Murphy Would be Interested in Returning in a Threequel

Should Alex Garland eventually find the motivation and put pen to paper, 28 Days Later star Cillian Murphy has recently revealed that he would be up for returning in a third zombie adventure. "I would never say never,” Murphy said in May last year. “I loved to make that movie. Was a long time ago. But sure [I would like to return]." Let’s hope that Garland’s bigger idea involves a Cillian Murphy comeback.

Written and directed by Alex Garland, Men is scheduled to be released in the United States on May 20 by A24.
