With the new year approaching, the highly-anticipated young adult adaptation The 5th Wave is just a few weeks away from release. While fans wait for this sci-fi thriller to hit theaters on January 22, 2016, Sony Pictures has released a new preview with behind-the-scenes footage and interviews featuring stars Chloe Moretz and Nick Robinson, along with author Rick Yancey. The featurette reveals what it was like for the cast and crew to bring this beloved novel to the big screen.

In the new film The 5th Wave, four waves of increasingly deadly attacks have left most of Earth decimated. Against a backdrop of fear and distrust, Cassie (Chloë Moretz) is on the run, desperately trying to save her younger brother. As she prepares for the inevitable and lethal 5th Wave, Cassie teams up with a young man who may become her final hope - if she can only trust him.

Aliens attack Earth in 5 waves, the 1st wave being a permanent blackout of power, setting earth back into the Stone Age. The 2nd wave being a massive tsunami, killing off all coastal cities. The 3rd wave being a plague caused by birds, leaving only the unlucky alive. The 4th wave being humans with activated alien brains. And what's The 5th Wave? Well that's what Cassie Sullivan wants to know. As she goes to fulfill a promise she'd made, to return to her brother, she meets Evan Walker, a strange but beautiful boy with a secret he won't tell her. But the closer she gets with Evan the closer she gets to getting her brother and unraveling the secrets of The 5th Wave.

Nick Robinson, Alex Roe, Ron Livingston, Maggie Siff, Maika Monroe and Liev Schreiber round out the supporting cast of The 5th Wave. J Blakeson (The Disappearance of Alice Creed) directs from an adapted script by Susannah Grant (Erin Brockovich), based on the young adult book by Rick Yancey. The adaptation will debut against 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi, Ride Along 2 and The Nut Job 2.

The 5th Wave novel was first published in 2013, followed by last year's The Infinite Sea. Rick Yancey is also publishing another book sequel, The Last Star, set to be released sometime in 2016. We don't have word yet on whether or not Sony plans on turning those books into movie sequels, but we'll surely find out after The 5th Wave hits theaters. While we wait for more details on these potential sequels, check out the new trailer below, and stay tuned for more details.
