Best known for her role on Comedy Central's Broad City, Abbi Jacobson is about to get very serious in the new Netflix drama 6 Balloons. She will appear alongside Dave Franco in the lead. The rest of the ensemble cast includes Jane Kaczmarek and Tim Matheson. There is no set launch date at this time.

Deadline reports that the drama series will delve deep into the subject of upper-middle class heroin addiction. The script is coming from Marja-Lewis Ryan. She will also direct. The synopsis reads as such.

"The drama unfolds on July 4, as Katie (Jacobson) discovers her brother Seth (Franco) has relapsed on heroin while his two-year old daughter is in his care."

That sounds pretty heavy, especially with Abbi Jacobson in the lead, as she has become known for her comedic talents. Campfire's Samantha Housman and Ross Dinerstein will produce alongside Free Association's Channing Tatum, Reid Carolin and Peter Kiernan. Marja-Lewis Ryan most recently wrote the Splash reboot script for Channing Tatum, which re-imagines the star as a merman, with Workaholics star Jillian Bell appearing as the girl who falls for this land-locked sea creature.

6 Balloons is another strong addition to Netflix's currently growing feature film slate. The streaming service also recently acquired the action drama Helicopter Heist, which stars Jake Gyllenhaal. Producers are looking at this as an opportunity to launch Abbi Jacobson as a major star. Jacobson is currently executive producing the new FX female-based comedy Meaty, which is based on the Samantha Irby memoir and blog B**ches Gotta Eat.

Earlier this year, Jacobson's Broad City was nominated for Best Comedy Series by the WGA. Her co-star Dave Franco was last seen in the comedy movie sequel Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, the action-thriller follow-up Now You See Me 2 and the drama Nerve. Both Dave Franco and Abbi Jacobson were recently announced as part of the main voice cast for Warner Bros. Lego Movie spin-off The Lego Ninjago Movie.
