John Krasinski may not end up directing A Quiet Place 2, but he is going to write it. Last year, Krasinski surprised us all by delivering not just one of the best horror movies of 2018, but one of the best movies overall with A Quiet Place. Paramount was quick to green light a sequel and, since Krasinski co-wrote the screenplay and directed the movie, it was crucial to get him back on board. But just how involved he's going to be is still a bit up in the air.

Scott Beck and Bryan Woods penned the initial draft of the screenplay for the first movie. Once John Krasinski boarded as director, he did a bit of a rewrite and injected some of his own ideas. Once he was talked into coming back for A Quiet Place 2, it was decided that he was going to be the one writing the movie. Speaking a bit about what we can expect, Krasinski had this to say.

"The beauty of it is that it's the expansion of a world. Most sequels are about the return of a villain or a hero, and you have to build a totally new story around your favorite hero or favorite villain. [With this sequel], we actually have the world to deal with. The world is actually the star of the movie. So, this set of circumstances, how the rest of the world is dealing with this apocalyptic tragedy, is the fun of it then. That's what drew me back."

That does sound interesting, but for the time being, it's frustratingly vague. But one of the best parts of A Quiet Place was how surprising it was at every turn. It's likely they're going to want to keep the sequel's secrets intact as long as possible. Speaking a bit further, after saying he was "Jedi mind tricked" into writing the sequel, John Krasinski reveals that it's not yet a sure thing that he'll return to the director's chair.

"So here I am now writing it and we'll see if I end up directing it. But it's an entertaining idea because I think for me, the cool part about this is, that it doesn't feel like a sequel."

It seems likely that Paramount would do just about everything in their power to keep John Krasinski on as a director. But at the very least, he'll have a lot of say in the direction of the sequel as writer and producer. The big question becomes, if he doesn't direct it, who will? That's where things will get very interesting, assuming the studio does have to go on a search for a new filmmaker. Presently, it hasn't been confirmed if any of the original cast members, such as Emily Blunt Noah Jupe or Millicent Simmonds, will return, or if this new movie will focus on new characters entirely. A Quiet Place 2 is currently set to hit theaters on May 15, 2020. This news comes from Empire.
