The literal cult classic Hereditary is one of A24's most well-known films, so it's no surprise that the indie production company would continue to sell merchandise for the movie over four years after its release. The surprise comes in the type of merchandise A24 has chosen: a gingerbread house kit of the iconic tree house from the movie.

It features a cast iron mold to make the frame of the tree house, as well as a few cultists and their leader, Paimon. The kit also includes the floor of the tree house, a ladder leading up to it, the four birch stands, and a base, all made out of food-safe ABS plastic. A tea light and window complete the set, representing the eerie light emanating from the twisted worship site.

It's a faithful rendition of the breathtaking set piece, ready to ship just in time for this holiday season on December 16th. While Hereditary fans and gingerbread enthusiasts will have to make the gingerbread themselves, the sturdy cast iron allows them to recreate an edible version of the tree house as many times as they want. Last but not least is an instruction booklet and recipe card for the gingerbread.

Strange Merchandise for a Strange Film

The 2018 psychological horror Hereditary
A24

While indeed an unusual product choice, Hereditary is undoubtedly an unusual movie. Anyone with a sensitive stomach will probably not want to feast on the gingerbread house and its characters too soon after watching the grisly film, known for its shocking and graphic images.

Hereditary was an instant hit, scoring $80 million on a $10 million budget and launching director Ari Aster's career. Aster later created Midsommar, a similarly disturbing film with a drastically different setting and plot. Aster has an uncanny way of crafting both beautiful and horrifying scenes simultaneously, and now fans will have the opportunity to do the same, albeit on a much smaller (and edible) scale.

That's not the only Hereditary merchandise A24 has for sale. They also offer a hardcover screenplay book, a few t-shirts, and a jigsaw puzzle of what is widely regarded as the most gut-wrenching image of the entire film. It isn't for the faint of heart, but neither is the movie itself. It's somehow not the only food-related product based on an Ari Aster film, either. A24's merchandise shop features a cookbook of recipes inspired by several horror movies, including Midsommar. The key word here is inspired, as the cookbook won't literally offer the exact recipe for the love potion depicted in the film, which hints at a repulsive ingredient.

Hereditary was released on June 8th, 2018. It stars Toni Collette, Alex Wolff, Millie Shapiro, and Gabriel Byrne. Ari Aster's next film, Disappointment Blvd., starring Joaquin Phoenix, is set to release sometime in 2023.
