Critics and audiences have a long history of having differing opinions. The recent Amazon TV series The Terminal List is a perfect example of this as the show impressed audiences but disappointed critics. This is just one example of how a piece of media can create such a strong division in opinions. While it's advisable to take other people's opinions into account, qualified or not, the only way to decide your opinion is to watch the movie and make a decision on your own.

Considering that most actors have roles they prefer to take on, it only makes sense that some actors would be praised by critics while others would be jeered. Some actors like Morgan Freeman and Tom Hanks have received insurmountable praise for their performances. Meanwhile, there are innumerable actors who have been criticized by critics, but are loved by the general public. Here are 10 actors whose movies consistently divided critics and audiences.

10 Adam Sandler

Touchstone Pictures

Probably the first person who came to mind when you thought about the division between critics and audiences, Adam Sandler is a Hollywood legend for his comedies. Consistently raking in box office hits, Sandler has never done well with critics — until his more recent, dramatic works, that is. Despite the fact that Sandler's films have earned well over $3 billion domestically, making him one of the top-grossing actors of all-time, critics have no respect for the comedy Sandler has to put out. Whether its Billy Madison or Waterboy, Sandler may not have the critics' support, but he has millions of loyal fans.

9 Marlon Wayans

The Dance-Off in White Chicks
Sony Pictures Releasing

Known for the first two Scary Movie films as well as the Haunted House franchise, Marlon Wayans is both an actor and director. One of his most successful/iconic films, White Chicks was a huge success at the box office and has become a cult classic, with many fans quoting it regularly, while critics were less than impressed, giving it a staggering 15% on Rotten Tomatoes. While Wayans has rarely been given a thumbs-up by the critics, he continues to trek on, making and starring in films that bring joy to his loyal fans.

8 Jennifer Love Hewitt

While Jennifer Love Hewitt's career has somewhat lessened in the last 20 years, she starred in a number of popular films during the late-1990s and early-2000s. Between I Know What You Did Last Summer and Heartbreakers, Hewitt certainly puts butts in the seats, managing to make millions for the live-action Garfield movie. Unfortunately, her film choices have never struck a chord with critics, and Hewitt is typically dismissed as a generic actor of her time. Fortunately, she has earned better reviews for her performance in 9-1-1.

7 Jessica Biel

Jessica Biel is yet another star who shines bright in the eyes of audiences, but seems to fall short of the critics' expectations. One of Biel's most popular films was Blade Trinity, which was a critical flop and has made a number of lists of "Worst Movies of All Time." The vast majority of her films have panned with critics, with the exception of The Illusionist, which earned both critical and box-office praise. Biel's career has seen a resurgence in the new series Candy, in which she stars as the title character, a series that has received a great deal of critical praise. This may be the turnaround Biel needs to prove her worth to critics.

6 Tyler Perry

Tyler Perry Studios

Tyler Perry is an immediately recognizable name for most as the star and creator of the popular Madea franchise. He has worked tirelessly to perfect his character based on one of his own relatives, but it would seem critics are not impressed. Despite the success and popularity of the Madea comedies, almost every single one of Perry's films has panned, with only a single film, I Can Do Bad All By Myself, having a Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes. The drastic divide just proves that not all films are universally good or bad.

5 Chris Farley

Chris Farley in Tommy Boy
Paramount Pictures

While the late Chris Farley is now considered a comedy legend, his films were not revered by critics at the time of their release. His films Tommy Boy and Beverly Hills Ninja have become staples among comedy fans, but were poorly received by critics, having an average critical approval rating of 23%. It's common knowledge that critics in general are not always fond of the slapstick comedy genre, so he didn't have much of a chance with them to begin with. Despite this, Farley will forever be remembered as one of the biggest names in comedy.

4 Mandy Moore

Mandy Moore This is Us (1)
NBC

Mandy Moore may seem an odd choice for this list considering her recent critical acclaim for her performance in This Is Us, but before the series premiered, she was not a favorite of critics. While you may have fond memories of Moore in films like The Princess Diaries, A Walk to Remember or Because I Said So, critics were not fond of her films until the release of Tangled in 2017, more than 20 years after her acting career began. Moore has always managed to warm the hearts of audiences, but didn't manage to get through to the critics until her phenomenal performance in This Is Us.

3 Zac Efron

Zac Efron stole the hearts of teens everywhere when he made his feature debut in High School Musical, and while fans love to love him, it would seem critics love to hate him. Despite phenomenal appearances in films like Hairspray and Neighbors, Efron's filmography has been dominated by "mindless" films like Dirty Grandpa and Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, both of which were received poorly by critics but enjoyed by audiences. His name is bound to bring box-office sales, but is not likely to earn critical acclaim.

2 Jennifer Garner

Jennifer Garner
Columbia Pictures

Jennifer Garner has brought many film lovers a number of feel-good movies, including the ever-popular 13 Going on 30 and Juno. While she has had small roles in come critical successes, her leading roles have seemed to gain her nothing but criticism. The average rating of Garner's top-grossing films on Rotten Tomatoes is a whopping 37%, which is not even a pass. That being said, audiences still love to see Garner on-screen thanks to her natural charm and that indescribable "it" factor that draws them in, but seems to turn critics off.

1 Jessica Alba

20th Century Studios

Jessica Alba is a beautiful actor whom audiences love to see on-screen. That being said, critics seem to have an issue with her film choices. While her decision to be in The Love Guru supports the critics' bashing, Alba has starred in a number of popular films including The Fantastic Four, Little Fockers and even the Machete movies. While all of these films were popular with audiences, critics didn't have anything nice to say about Alba. In recent years, she has taken a step away from acting, but she is surely missed by her fans.
