In the horror world, there are several actors and actresses that are well known for their involvement with the genre. You know their faces, you know their calling card that they usually make sure to pop in with each movie, and you know their characters. Now that the horror genre is shifting and becoming more specific and relevant to the new generation, more actors are starting to test the waters with their involvement with horror. You have scream queens that you know and love that have been around for many years, but now, new and fresh faces are starting to appear in huge blockbusters that take over theaters. It’s always nice to see more actresses start to gain their footing with different genres in film, and here are 10 that should appear in more horror movies.

10 Betty Gabriel

Betty Gabriel gave audiences the performance of a lifetime in Get Out. Davis played the maid Georgina, who was actually the grandmother of the Armitage family. She was a success when it came to the brain-switch surgery, but her mannerisms gave her away when it came to certain things, and Georgina would become lucid in her body. Gabriel’s mannerisms were so eerie and precise, one can’t help but get the chills as they watch the scene of her character admiring herself in the mirror, not knowing Chris is watching her. If Gabriel were to lead her own horror movie, you can bet she would knock it out of the park.

9 Jenna Ortega

Jenna Ortega has quickly shot to stardom in the past year, and has proven that she is an up-and-coming scream queen that can hang with the big names. She gives the audience a taste of her creepy side in the hit show Wednesday but takes it up several notches with her roles in the Scream franchise as well as X. Ortega is relatively young when compared to other actresses well versed in horror, so it’s more exciting to watch and see where the talented scream queen will go next. She could quickly become an iconic final girl, like Neve Campbell and Jamie Lee Curtis.

8 Samara Weaving

Searchlight Pictures

Samara Weaving is in a really good spot right now in her horror acting journey, especially after appearing in Scream VI. In 2019, she starred in the thriller film Ready or Not and proved that she has what it takes to be a final girl you can confidently root for. Also, Weaving was the front-runner for the Netflix movies The Babysitter and The Babysitter: Killer Queen, where she played Bee, the leader of a demonic cult that sacrificed virgins for the devil. Weaving has a very promising future within the horror genre, simply because she has proven that she can properly lead a thriller or horror. Not only that, but she’s a strong leading lady after being in 9 Perfect Strangers with Melissa McCarthy and Nicole Kidman and holding her own throughout the physiological series.

7 Anya Taylor-Joy

Searchlight Pictures

She’s Princess Peach in the Super Mario Bros. movie, but she’s also one of the best horror actresses of this decade. You might know her from The Queen’s Gambit or Emma, but some of her biggest projects are horror-based. One of Anya Taylor-Joy's first movies was The Witch, and this horror flick will absolutely make you feel creeped out from the inside out once you realize the goat is genuinely the devil. Then, she appeared in Split and Glass as Casey Cooke and made her debut as a final girl. Most recently, she starred in The Menu, and if you have any doubt that Anya Taylor-Joy belongs in horror, her role as Margot will change your name.

6 Toni Collette

It is said and true that Toni Collette should have won an Oscar for her performance in Hereditary. She was so good and so scary; she proved that she was a grieving mother who was on a very thin string to begin with; and she nailed the entire aspect of this specific type of horror. Toni Collete is a very well-respected actress and has starred in plenty of thriller and horror films such as Velvet Buzzsaw, Krampus, and The Sixth Sense. It seems that Collette really finds her niche when starring in a horror film, and we are all for it.

5 Lupita Nyong’o

Lupita Nyong’o is an actress who has taken on plenty of serious roles in her acting career, but the horror movie Us is one of her more defined projects that highlighted Nyong’o’s range. In Jordan Peele’s Us, Nyong’o plays Adelaide Wilson, and Red steals the show as she portrays a very damaged character as well as a protective mother ready to risk it all. If you can believe it, Nyong’o only has about 27 acting credits under her belt, and with Us, she demonstrated how wide her acting range is. She shines in the Black Panther movies, but we're more excited to see who she plays in the newest A Quiet Place film.

4 Florence Pugh

Something that the horror genre could really thrive on right now is a new and fresh slasher movie. Not a remake, but a new story with a new slasher and fresh-faced victims that isn’t competing with other horror movies. Florence Pugh has been in two major horror/thriller films: Midsommar and Don’t Worry, Darling. Pugh would be a great contender to star in a slasher film as the final girl, because if Midsommar taught us anything, it’s that Pugh has the range to lead such a movie. She’s captivating; her facial expressions give nothing away, and it’s easy to picture her in a slasher or horror film.

3 Drew Barrymore

Drew Barrymore is one of the most well-known scream queens for her involvement in the first Scream movie. One can’t deny how influential that opening scene was, as Ghostface called her up as she was making popcorn on the stove, and she indulged him by playing the dreaded game of What’s Your Favorite Movie? She is the first kill on screen for the entire franchise as Casey Becker; initially, she was given the role of Sidney Prescott. Barrymore recently stated that she fought to have the role of Becker instead of Prescott because she wanted to die early and make an impact on viewers. How iconic is that? If Barrymore were to star in a slasher now, you can trust that dedicated Scream fans and fans of the actress in general would flock to see it.

2 Neve Campbell

Dimension Films

Sidney Prescott is one of the best and most resilient final girls in all of horror history, spending most of her young life being hunted down by multiple people who wanted to kill her for various reasons. Neve Campbell hasn’t been in many horror films after the Scream franchise, but we’d be very excited to see if she were to return to the genre. Campbell has proved that she has what it takes to give you a good scare and keep you on the edge of your seat the entire time. When she made her big return to Scream (2022), her presence was appreciated as well as iconic as she reprized her role as Sidney Prescott.

1 Jamie Lee Curtis

Blumhouse

Everyone knows that Jamie Lee Curtis had her breakout in John Carpenter’s Halloween; and she quickly became the top final girl. After multiple movies where she starred as the iconic Laurie Strode, Curtis deserves to showcase her horror skills in a movie that doesn’t exist around the franchise. Curtis has had so many acting accomplishments, ranging from comedy to dramatic roles, and one of her most recent characters was her role in the hit movie Knives Out. Jamie Lee Curtis that she can hold her own, clearly, and we would love to see her in a new and fresh horror flick.
