According to Variety, Pfeffer Film, Offspring Entertainment and Disney Studios have tapped scribes Ron Burch and David Kidd to adapt Michael Leonard's book The Last Lap.

Burch and Kidd most recently rewrote "Yours, Mine and Ours" for MGM and producer Bob Simonds.

Offspring principal Adam Shankman is attached to direct The Last Lap, which is being developed as a family comedy.

The book is due for release in 2006. Ballantine paid seven figures for the manuscript, and Disney paid mid-six against low-seven figures for film rights (Daily Variety, Jan. 17).

Leonard, a "Today Show" reporter, went on a monthlong cross-country RV trip with his elderly parents to revisit the people and places that had shaped their lives. Leonard's grown children also went on the trip, which ended with the birth of his granddaughter. He filed regular reports on the journey on "Today."
