In a recent article from Entertainment Weekly, they caught up with Hairspray director Adam Shankman to find out the progress on the highly anticipated sequel, Hairspray 2.

While Shankman wasn't overly effusive he did say, "We just got an outline and some ideas from John Waters, and now we're going out to writers." The new story will continue to follow Tracy Turnblad (Nikki Blonsky) and her buddies as they move through the "next era of music," that was big in the late '60s. "That period was superpolitical," Shankman stated, "it was a time of serious change."

It also looks like Link Larkin (Zac Efron) will get heavily into the British music of the time.

"We're trying to track, in a comedic way, the historical elements." Shankman offered.

Hairspray 2 comes to theaters June 2010.
