The Addams Family have been a part of popular culture since being created as a series of cartoon strips by Charles Addams back in 1938. Developed for TV in the 60s and then brought to the big screen by Barry Sonnenfeld in the 1990s, recent years have seen a whole new generation being introduced to the Addams' world thanks to two animated movies and the upcoming Tim Burton TV series. Despite this new era of Addams Family value, one person who has no interest in returning to a future project is Sonnenfeld. He told ComicBook.com that he would though be marking the first film's 30th anniversary with a 4K Ultra HD release that will finally restore one particular edited scene to how it was intended to be seen.

He told ComicBook.com, "I did my two films on The Addams Family, I did my three films on Men in Black, and I got some other things that I wanna do. We are working on a reissue in 4K, the original The Addams Family. We're putting back the entire 'mamushka.' There was the big song and dance number in the middle, written by Adolph Green and Marc Shaiman and Betty Comden. We had cut it in half and we're restoring the full-length version, so that's exciting."

For those who remember the movie well, the "mamushka" dance segment sees Raul Julia's Gomez Addams welcoming Christopher Lloyd's Uncle Fester back into the family in the traditional way of the "mamushka" dance. While the sequence seen in the movies theatrical cut seemed like it was already a reasonable length, so a fully extended version is going to be something worth seeing, and that theme of music is something that links to Sonnenfeld's new project, Schmigadoon! which premieres on Apple TV+ on July 16.

Parodying the Golden Age of musicals, the series finds two backpackers discovering themselves living in a town that exists inside a 1940s musical. While it may not seem an obvious choice considering his previous work, Sonnefeld pointed out, "One of the things I really like to do, if you look at the body of my work, is world creating. Whether it's Wild Wild West, Addams Family, Pushing Daisies, A Series of Unfortunate Events, or Men in Black, there's always a quirkiness to everything I do. And, also, an otherworldly, even if it's real-world based ... you won't see me directing a new legal drama. I wouldn't know where to put the camera or what to do. The great thing about Schmigadaoon! is it lets me continue in that world. Oh, The Tick, the original The Tick with Patrick Warburton, is another one."

So while Sonnenfeld is happy to go down his preferred route, we still have the extended 4K release of his original The Addams Family movie to look forward to, and whatever the future holds for the family beyond the current animated movies and Wednesday TV series. Whatever it holds, fans of Sonnenfeld's work will be able to enjoy his latest offering Schmigadoon! when it arrives on Apple TV+ in a couple of weeks.
