Just one day after Rooney Mara entered negotiations to play Tiger Lily in Pan, Adeel Akhtar has joined the cast as Smee.

The project puts a new spin on author J.M. Barrie's beloved Peter Pan, with young Peter being whisked away to Neverland for the first time, leading the locals in a rebellion against the nefarious pirate Blackbeard (Hugh Jackman). Garrett Hedlund stars as Captain Hook, who starts out as an ally to young Peter Pan, before turning to his nefarious ways. Smee, who was portrayed by Bob Hoskins in Steven Spielberg's 1991 adaptation Hook, is the right-hand man to Hook. The producers still have not cast Peter Pan at this time.

Our report from yesterday revealed that director Joe Wright is setting up a multi-cultural cast, in an effort to challenge the audience's pre-conceived notions of these classic characters. Jason Fuchs wrote the script, with Greg Berlanti, Paul Webster and Sarah Schechter producing. No production schedule was given, but Warner Bros. has already issued a July 17, 2015 release date.

Adeel Akhtar's previous credits include Traitor, Four Lions and The Dictator.
