Vertical Entertainment's newest feature film Adopting Audrey is getting a day-and-date release on Aug. 26, and ahead of the premiere, we can debut an exclusive clip featuring star Jena Malone. In the movie, Malone (The Neon Demon, The Hunger Games franchise) plays a woman named Audrey who looks to create her own family life by putting herself up for adoption. In our exclusive clip, which you can check out below, Audrey is trying to get to know the patriarch of her adoptive family by "hanging out" with him in the garage.

The movie is directed and written by M. Cahill (The Kings of California). Along with Malone, the film also stars Robert Hunger-Bühler, Emily Kuroda (Gilmore Girls), Will Rogers (A Rainy Day in New York), and Brooke Bloom (I Know What You Did Last Summer). Cahill produced Adopting Audrey with Joanna Colbert and Lawrence Inglee while Malone served as an executive producer.

The official synopsis for Adopting Audrey is as follows:

Fired from her seventh job in two years and estranged from her family, Audrey (Jena Malone) is restless and dwells in a distinctly modern solitude, relying on YouTube for companionship. After falling down a video rabbit hole, she discovers the world of adult adoption and decides to try it herself in hopes of finding a sense of belonging. Audrey soon finds an adoptive family whose dysfunction mirrors her own, allowing her to form an unlikely bond with the misanthropic patriarch, Otto (Robert Hunger-Bühler), who is seemingly as cold as she is courteous.

Adopting Audrey Is Based on True Events

Adopting Audrey has a unique premise, and as it turns out, its plot is actually inspired by true events. The film's writer-director knows a woman whose story is very similar to what happens in Adopting Audrey, as she had, as an adult, joined another family that was willing to "adopt" her. At a certain point, it was clear that her tale would make for a compelling feature film. Fortunately, Vertical Entertainment execs shared that opinion, resulting in the company picking up the film for its North American distribution.

“A few years ago, I met an adult woman who made the remarkable decision to put herself up for adoption with a new family," director M. Cahill said of the inspiration for Adopting Audrey. "The more time we spent together, the more I felt that hers was a story that needed to be shared. We’re all grateful for the way in which the film and its themes have resonated with Vertical. We couldn’t hope for better partners."

Vertical Entertainment's SVP of Acquisitions, Tony Piantedosi, added: "We are thrilled to have secured Adopting Audrey. It is a unique story that M. Cahill has brought to life from paper to the big screen highlighted by exceptional performances from Jena and Robert. We are excited to bring it to audiences."
