HBO Documentary Films has picked up the U.S. TV rights to Havana Marking's film Afghan Star. According to The Hollywood Reporter, this two-time 2009 Sundance award-winning film will make its premiere on the cable channel in early 2010.
Currently in theatrical release, the film chronicles the lives of four young finalists who risk everything to compete on the Afghanistan reality series Afghan Star, which is their version of American Idol. Viewers are asked to follow the lives of two men and two women as pop culture slowly takes root in their country after decades of Taliban rule.
Afghan Star won both a directing award and an audience award at this year's Sundance film festival.
