At the time, it was speculated that he might be playing Edwin Jarvis, a faithful butler to The Avengers in the Marvel comic books. The character was changed to a high-tech AI computer for the Marvel movies staring with 2008's Iron Man, with Paul Bettany voicing the character.
Now, Marvel has confirmed that James D'Arcy is playing the original Jarvis in the flesh as he steps into assume the role of Edwin Jarvis. This is the official press release from Marvel:
