Isn’t it fascinating how everlasting the legacy of a legend can be? Elvis, the one and only, was many things — a singer, an actor, and even a Sergeant in the United States Army. Yet, above all, the man is known for his music. He is a leading figure, a pioneer of rockabilly, the earliest style of rock and roll. One hit song released after another, and the next thing you know, he’s dubbed the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.

As monumental as the title was, Elvis lived his life showered in fortune and fame. However, not even that can stop the man from meeting death in 1977. Nevertheless, the living never stopped paying tribute to the legendary singer through various creative adaptations made in his honor, truly a treatment fit for a king. One of those honoring acts is also about to debut on Mar. 17 this year in the form of a TV series titled Agent Elvis.

The show has long been in production and, at last, has given us the best kind of update: an official trailer, posted on the first day of March. With Viva Las Vegas playing in the background, the two-minute preview delivers the complete package with its top-notch Sony Pictures Animation quality and scintillating highlights. To be more specific, this preview is for the series’ first season, and if the actual outcome is as sublime as the clip promises, the renewal of season two shouldn’t be too far away. That being said, let us now dive into the trailer breakdown.

Introducing Agent King and His Fabulous Crews

What happens when stars meet stars? They collide, and boom, it’s sensational. And that is exactly what’s happening in the trailer. The man of the moment, Elvis, will be played by Matthew McConaughey, which is a piece of info we’ve known for quite some time, along with the main premise of the superstar joining a secret spy program to take down villains. The preview opens with a single voice saying, “Ah, Elvis. You were the cultural phenomenon. You started a revolution, sonny boy”, acknowledging his phenomenal stardom while the montages of Elvis’ most notable stage performances play along for a good ten seconds.

The tone shifts abruptly as Elvis, with a “Hello my name is Agent King” sticker glued to his coat, is introduced to “the chance to weaponize rock and roll.” It marks the opportunity of becoming an agent at an organization called TCB, which sports an emblem comprising said letters and a lightning bolt — a clear reference to Elvis’ most celebrated affiliated band, whose initials stand for Taking Care of Business.

He takes the job, of course. Otherwise, we wouldn’t be able to meet his remarkably diverse set of colleagues, whose voice casts’ identities have been kept under ironclad protection for a long time until now. Though the characters’ names are yet to be disclosed, the trailer proudly displays the major involvements of the Oscar-nominated MCU actor Don Cheadle, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Kaitlin Olson, Jackass’ Johnny Knoxville, and four-time Emmy nominee Niecy Nash.

Starring alongside them is prominent TV and movie stars most of us are familiar with, namely, Ed Helms, Jason Mantzoukas, Christina Hendricks, Kieran Culkin, Chris Elliott, Asif Ali, Fred Armisen, Ego Nwodim, Simon Pegg, Craig Robinson, Gary Cole, George Clinton, Tara Strong, and Tony Cavalero.

Then comes the biggest surprise: Priscilla Presley, the show’s co-creator and the singer’s ex-wife, will appear as herself, who happens to be a tough fighter, as we see her kicking and punching some intruders while in her nightgown. Let’s also not forget the agent’s partner, Scatter, the ill-mannered monkey, portrayed by the amazingly talented voice actor, Tom Kenny, most notably known for his long-running SpongeBob SquarePants role.

Presenting the Fantastic Blend of Action and Comedy

In accordance with its TV-MA rating, the trailer of Agent Elvis certainly doesn’t hold back from exhibiting violence and profanity, as in the F-bombs and actual bombs. But of course, they’re all justified in the spirit of adult-oriented action-comedy entertainment. This being a secret agent TV show, what with the “insanely dangerous kick-ass spy gadgets” and missions that are as perilous, Elvis consistently engages in full-on action mode when dealing with criminals.

Fearlessly crashing through tall buildings window, knocking down a man from great heights, wading across the wild jungle to infiltrate a heavily-guarded lair, and fighting off a guy airborne with a jetpack on his back are the teased spectacles of Elvis’ physical stunts. But, then, there’s Don Cheadle’s character guaranteeing “a very abrupt, violent death.” And well, let’s say it includes a car chase, a gun, a bazooka, a turbine jet, an axe, a shark, a chainsaw, and an explosion, each of which befalls humans.

The glimpse of comedy shown in the trailer seems promising as well. The logic in “It’s not stealing if it’s not his. Same way, it’s not murder if you do it with your eyes closed” is hilarious, albeit askew. Allusions to Elvis’ filmography, specifically Blue Hawaii and Change of Habit, are also covered. The latter is further unfolded through a scene replicating the crucial part of the plot where Elvis is dressed as a doctor, and three nuns are by his side. A person who’s presumably an imitation of the film’s director, William A. Graham, utters, “Your journey is the journey of America, and at some point, you make out with a nun,” an irreverent joke directed at the movie’s main idea.

With Agent Elvis’ arrival on Netflix only a matter of days away, fans couldn’t be more overjoyed, especially since it’s around the 95th Academy Awards. As we all know, it’s the ceremony where Austin Butler, the Best Actor’s most favored nominee for his outstanding performance as Elvis, awaits the announcement of the fateful, hard-to-predict winner.
