The King is heading to Netflix, as the streaming service has ordered an animated comedy series featuring Elvis Presley as a secret agent. Called Agent King, the series brings in Mike Arnold (Archer) to serve as showrunner, writer, and executive producer. Elvis' wife Priscilla Presley, who co-created the series with John Eddie, spoke about how this interesting premise came about.

"From the time Elvis was a young boy he always dreamed of being the superhero fighting crime and saving the world! Agent King lets him do just that," Presley says in a statement. "My co-creator John Eddie and I are so excited to be working with Netflix and Sony Animation on this amazing project and getting the chance to show the world an Elvis they haven't seen before."

It pretty much goes without saying Agent King is not like any animated series you've ever seen before. According to the official plot description from Netflix, "Elvis Presley trades in his white jumpsuit for a jet pack when he is covertly inducted into a secret government spy program to help battle the dark forces that threaten the country he loves - all while holding down his day job as the King of Rock and Roll." If you're like me, the synopsis had you at "jet pack."

This isn't the only Elvis project currently in the works, as a theatrical biopic about the King is also in production. The movie will focus primarily on the relationship between a young Elvis at the start of his career and his manager, Colonel Tom Parker. After A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood star Tom Hanks was cast as Parker, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood actor Austin Butler snagged the coveted role of Elvis Presley after extensive screen testing and heavy competition. It's yet to be revealed when the movie will be hitting a theater near you, but the plan as of now is to start shooting early next year in Queensland, Australia, with Warner Bros. handling worldwide distribution.

Presley is undoubtedly one of the most popular entertainers of all time. After striking it big in the '50s with songs like "Heartbreak Hotel" and "Blue Suede Shoes," Presley began appearing in movies as an actor as well. After the British Invasion pushed him to the side in the '60s, Presley had his famous Comeback Special in 1968, bringing him back to the forefront of the mainstream. Still, for all of his success, Presley struggled with his own demons in his personal life, resulting in years of heavy prescription drug abuse. In 1977, Presley died unexpectedly at his Graceland home at the age of 42, though his legacy remains just as strong as it ever was 42 years later.

There's no word yet on a potential release date on Netflix for Agent King, but this seems like it could be a fun series to binge when it makes its eventual premiere on the streaming service. Let's just hope they get the voice right. This news comes to us from Variety.
