Blair Underwood has signed on for a recurring role in Season 2 of ABC's Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. The actor will portray Dr. Andrew Garner, the estranged ex-husband of Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen). The character will make his debut in a March episode, with filming slated to begin this week.

This will be the actor's first role inside the Marvel Universe, although it isn't known exactly how many episodes he will appear in during the back half of Season 2, or if there is the potential for him to become a series regular if Season 3 should be ordered. Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. aired its midseason finale, "What They Become" on Tuesday, with the show going on an extended hiatus before returning on Tuesday, March 3 at 9 PM ET on ABC. Taking its place will be the eight-episode series Marvel's Agent Carter, which debuts with a two-hour premiere on Tuesday, January 6 at 8 PM ET on ABC.

The casting brings Blair Underwood back to ABC, where he previously starred on Dirty Sexy Money. Most recently, the actor starred on NBC's short-lived drama series Ironside and the Lifetime TV movie The Trip to Bountiful, where he starred alongside Cicely Tyson. His other TV credits include shows such as L.A. Law, The New Adventures of Old Christine, In Treatment and The Event.
