Disney's live-action adaptation of Aladdin easily took the number one spot over the four-day Memorial Day holiday weekend. The movie was only estimated to bring in around $80 million, but instead earned $112.7 million, proving there were a lot of people who were not as scared of Will Smith's Genie as they claimed to be on social media. Aladdin holds the record for the fifth-highest Memorial Day weekend total ever. Another Disney movie holds the record for the holiday weekend, which is 2007's Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End with $139 million.
John Wick 3: Parabellum fell to number two this weekend with a four-day haul of $31 million. To date, the action packed sequel has earned over $182 million globally in just two weeks in theaters, which is also defying box office predictions. The debut weekend secured the official release date of John Wick 4, which diehard fans were hoping would happen since Keanu Reeves had expressed interest in coming back.
Avengers: Endgame fell to number three at the box office this weekend with $22.3 million for its fifth weekend in theaters. The massive movie has slowed down at the box office quite a bit since exploding out of the gate with over $1 billion in a weekend. As of now, Endgame sits at $2.68 billion, globally, which is a little over $100 million away from taking down James Cameron's Avatar as the highest grossing movie of all time. Detective Pikachu took the fourth spot this holiday weekend after bringing in $17.2 million. To date, the Pokémon movie has earned over $356 million globally in its three weeks in theaters.
James Gunn's superhero horror movie BrightBurn debuted at number five this weekend after taking in $9.5 million. The movie has been gaining positive reviews from critics and will more than likely end up doing pretty well throughout the rest of its theatrical run. Olivia Wilde's directorial debut Booksmart debuted at number six over the holiday weekend. The teen comedy has also been receiving positive reviews and it brought in $8.6 million.
A Dog's Journey was able to take the seventh spot this weekend after earning $5.5 million. The family movie has earned nearly $50 million at the box office in its two weeks in theaters. Rebel Wilson and Anne Hathaway's Dirty Rotten Scoundrels remake The Hustle fell down to the eight position this weekend after bringing in $4.7 million. As for number nine, The Intruder took that spot with $2.9 million, while comedy Longshot took the tenth spot this weekend with $2.1 million.
