Yesterday, Walt Disney Studios helped celebrate the end of Daylight Savings Time by releasing a brief teaser for their highly-anticipated sequel Alice Through the Looking Glass, which is set for release on May 27, 2016. Today, the studio has released yet another teaser through their Twitter account, which could indicate that the first trailer may be coming very soon. It's worth noting that Disney and Pixar will be releasing the new animated adventure The Good Dinosaur later this month, so it's possible the new trailer may be attached to that project.
Mia Wasikowska will return as Alice from the 2010 blockbuster Alice in Wonderland, which earned over $1 billion worldwide at the box office. Also returning is Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen and Anne Hathaway as the White Queen. Sacha Baron Cohen plays a new character called Time whose powers allow Alice to visit the Wonderland characters at different times in their lives. This will allow fans to see some of the characters' prequel stories to the classic Lewis Caroll story of the same name.
Director James Bobin brings his own unique vision to the spectacular world Tim Burton created on screen in 2010 with Alice in Wonderland, in which Alice (Mia Wasikowska) returns to the whimsical world of Underland and travels back in time to save the Mad Hatter. The film, which once again features Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter and the voices of Alan Rickman, Stephen Fry, Michael Sheen and Timothy Spall, introduces several new characters as well: Zanik Hightopp (Rhys Ifans), the Mad Hatter's father, and Time himself (Sacha Baron Cohen), a peculiar creature who is part human, part clock.
The screenplay for Alice Through the Looking Glass is provided by Linda Woolverton, who wrote 2010's Alice in WonderlandJoe Roth, Suzanne Todd, Jennifer Todd and Tim Burton produce Alice Through the Looking Glass and John G. Scotti is the executive producer. Presented in Digital 3D™, Real D 3D and IMAX 3D, Disney's Alice Through the Looking Glass opens in U.S. theaters on May 27, 2016.
Alice Through the Looking Glass will not not be the only sequel hitting theaters on May 27, 2016, with this project going up against X-Men: Apocalypse, setting the stage for what could be an epic box office showdown. Both franchise have massive fan bases, and it will be interesting to see which will prevail. Stay tuned for the first trailer for Alice Through the Looking Glass, but, in the meantime, take a look at the latest teaser, along with the video that debuted yesterday.
