Earlier today, 20th Century Fox held a presentation where they showed off new footage from Logan (March 3, 2017), Alien: Covenant (May 19, 2017) and War for the Planet of the Apes (July 14, 2017), three of the studio's most highly-anticipated movies. Members of the New York press were present for this big event, and we already showed you how the press reacted to the 40 minutes of Logan footage that was shown. While the studio didn't unveil nearly that much footage from this Alien prequel, it was received just as well, as you can see in the early reactions below.
We have rounded up a number of Twitter reactions, which were largely positive. Angie Han of Slashfilm called the footage "gory, terrifying and disgusting," and she can't wait to see the rest. CinemaBlend's Sean O'Connell said this movie will be a "full blown bloody horror film," that falls in line with the original 1979 classic. Fandango's Erik Davis teased there are "multiple aliens," while describing the footge as "badass." Several of the critics made comparisons to the original Alien, directed by Ridley Scott, which should make hardcore fans happy, especially those who were underwhelmed by Prometheus. Actress Katherine Waterston was on hand for the presentation, revealing that most of the characters in the film are couples, while teasing there are "parallels" to Sigourney Weaver's iconic Ripley character.
This presentation also comes just a few weeks afer the studio issued a new poster and release date. The poster reveals that the movie will now hit theaters May 19, 2017, going up against Paramount's Baywatch remake, New Line's horror sequel Annabelle 2, 20th Century Fox's family sequel Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul and Open Road Films' animated sequel The Nut Job 2. If it would have stayed in its August 4, 2017 date, it would be going up against Open Road Films' All I See Is You and Blazing Samurai, along with Sony's EmojiMovie: Express Yourself. It isn't clear when 20th Century Fox may release the footage shown at this New York City event to the public, but the trailer debut could be just around the corner.
It isn't known if the footage shown today cleared up a recent rumor. Michael Fassbender revealed last month that he is actually portraying multiple android characters in Alien: Covenant. The actor will be reprising his role as the robot David from 2012's Prometheus, but also another alien character named Walter. The actor also revealed that director Ridley Scott already had a cut of the movie assembled, calling the director "a machine," which is likely one reason why 20th Century Fox pushed the release date by three whole months.
Alien: Covenant centers on members of an intergalactic expedition, aboard the ship Covenant, who discover what they think is an uncharted paradise. They soon find that this planet is a dark and dangerous place, whose only inhabitant is David (Michael Fassbender), the sole surviving member of the Prometheus expedition. Back in November, director Ridley Scott teased that Noomi Rapace's Elizabeth Shaw, who was also alive at the end of Prometheus, will have just a small role in Alien: Covenant, but there have been other reports that her role has been cut entirely. Alien: Covenant also stars Katherine Waterston, Danny McBride, Demián Bichir, Jussie Smollett, Amy Seimetz, Carmen Ejogo and Callie Hernandez. Ridley Scott is directing from a script by Jack Paglen, Michael Green and John Logan. Take a look at the tweets describing the new footage from Alien: Covenant, as we continue the wait for the first trailer.
