Director James Cameron's 1986 thriller Aliens is still considered a classic of sci-fi and horror cinema. If you're a die-hard fan of this sequel, with some spare cash to burn, Japanese watch company Seiko has announced that they are reissuing the same watch worn by Sigourney Weaver's Ellen Ripley in the film. However, there are only 6,000 watches that are available for purchase on Seiko's Japanese website.

The original watch, dubbed the Seiko Giugiaro 7A28-7000, was actually designed by famed auto designer Giorgetto Giugiaroto, which has a panel sticking out of one side of the watch that features chronograph buttons. This watch was also the first in the world to employ an analog quartz chronograph movement. Here's how the official Seiko website describes this unique design after you translate the text from Japanese.

"We remake the world's first analog quartz chronograph that has been adopted in the sci-fi movie of the 1980s. At that time, the cut open drawn sketch has been received from Giugiaro, in order to realize the chronograph with push buttons arranged in a direction perpendicular to the arm, for example, by developing a new mechanism. This design, at the same time prevents the erroneous operation in a state of holding the four-wheeled vehicles and two-wheeled steering, which has been designed to be easily operated even with the driving gloves"

Seiko will be releasing this watch in two models, the grey SCED035 ($260) and the black SCED037 ($292). There will only be 3,000 watches sold in each model, so you may want to act fast if you want this timepiece. The reissues won't be exactly the same as the original model, since there is no crown or extra button on the left side. It's worth noting that the original Giugiaro 7A28-7000 can still be found on auction sites online, but they normally cost around $1,000, and are rarely in perfect condition. It isn't known why Seiko is re-issuing the watch now, although it's worth noting that Aliens will be celebrating its 30th Anniversary next year.

This watch is coming along at a time when the entire Alien franchise is enjoying a resurgence. Ridley Scott is returning to direct Alien: Covenant, a sequel to his 2012 sci-fi thriller Prometheus. This follow-up, along with at least one or two additional sequels, will eventually connect to the original sci-fi horror classic Alien. Take a look at these new watches below, and let us know if you plan on purchasing this unique timepiece, along with a photo of Sigourney Weaver's Ellen Ripley wearing the original watch in Aliens.
