The cast of Taken director's upcoming project has added yet another impressive name to the list, as The Post and BoJack Horseman actress Alison Brie is on board, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Pierre Morel's upcoming action-comedy Freelance has already confirmed the WWE superstar and Peacemaker star John Cena as one of the leads. With the two on the front lines, fans can expect the project to pack quite a punch.

Looks like the shadow of playing soldiers will follow the WWE superstar for a while, as he is set to bring to life the role of a retired special forces operative in Freelance.

The script, written by Jacob Lentz (who also wrote 94 episodes for Jimmy Kimmel Live! during 2009 and 2010), follows a former Special Forces operative who, bored with the regular civilian life, takes on the job of providing protection to a journalist (Alison Brie) who is hoping to salvage her career by interviewing a dictator. However, things quickly go south as a military coup breaks out in the middle of the interview. Now the rather odd and mismatched trio of the dictator, the journalist, and the ex-Spec Ops must escape to the jungle where they must survive the military chasing them, animals hunting them, and each other.

Alison Brie has proven herself in the genre of comedy, being the star of the cult comedy series Community and the three season-run of the Netflix comedy GLOW, which left fans broken-hearted as it was gone too soon. The upcoming Pierre Morel action-comedy is her first film since 2020 releases Promising Young Woman and Happiest Season. Following Freelance, Brie is set to star in the romantic comedy Somebody I Used to Know, directed by her husband Dave Franco.

John Cena is currently winning hearts as the DC Comics anti-hero Peacemaker, reprising the role after the 2021 film The Suicide Squad. The hulking star's upcoming projects include Matthew Vaughn’s globetrotting espionage epic Argylle and in the political thriller The Independent, where he plays a presidential candidate.

Freelance is directed by Pierre Morel and AGC Studios, run by Stuart Ford, is behind the project. Steve Richards of Endurance Media, Renee Tab of Sentient, and Christopher Tuffin (2001 Maniacs, Line of Duty) are on the board as producers of the film. AGC, ICM Partners, and UTA Independent are representing the domestic rights of Freelance, and AGC and Endurance are co-financing the film. Production is all set to commence next month in Colombia.
