For Alison Brie, there hasn't been anything worse happen to her career than when her pro wrestling series GLOW got the boot at Netflix. Debuting on Netflix in 2017, GLOW is inspired by the real-life pro wrestling league Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, aka GLOW. After three seasons, the show had been renewed for season 4, leading Brie and the rest of the cast to prepare for another season. In 2020, Netflix reversed course and canceled the series, shutting down production on season 4 due to the pandemic.

Speaking with Decider to promote her new film Spin Me Round, Brie reflected on the surprise cancelation of GLOW at Netflix. Brie describes the situation as the "great heartbreak" of her career, though she remains grateful for the memories that she has of working on the show.

"It’s the great heartbreak of my career. But it will forever live on as, like, this great thing. I loved working on it – maybe more than anything I’ve worked on! – and I miss it a lot. But I feel very grateful for the time I had on the show."

Brie agrees that it was shocking when it was announced that Netflix was shelving GLOW, but at the same time, she recognizes that there were much more important things to worry about.

"Yeah, it was surprising! But it was sort of eclipsed by the shock of everything that was happening globally. [Laughs] You know, so in a way it was almost like it put things in perspective."

GLOW also starred Betty Gilpin, Sydelle Noel, Britney Young, Britt Baron, Kate Nash, Gayle Rankin, and Marc Maron. It was created for Netflix by Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch.

While it was unfortunate to see GLOW come to an end, Brie's career would continue on. These days, Alison Brie is focused on her new movie Spin Me Round. Co-written by Brie and director Jeff Baena, Spin Me Round stars Brie as the manager of an Italian food restaurant who's invited to Tuscany. We recently spoke with Brie about what it was like to play this role.

"I was really drawn to the self-empowerment story of Amber. As a character, she's not super active as far as protagonists go. It really takes her most of the movie to begin to assert herself and try to take control over her own destiny. And I kind of liked that, because I feel like it's not something we see all the time, but it is a part of the human condition."

Brie went on to add:

"It certainly resonates with me in terms of, like, when I was younger and the way that I would sort of bend to the people around me or the circumstances around me, and Amber's kind of that way, she doesn't want to rock the boat. She's very polite, and because of that she is sort of stuck in her life. She's been a manager at this Italian restaurant chain for nine years. She really doesn't seem to have aspirations to do other things. It's like she hasn't even taken the time to ask herself that, she's a bit too much of a people pleaser."

Spin Me Round is now available in theaters, On Demand, and on the AMC+ app.
