We'll soon see Dean Winters causing mayhem again soon enough. In years past, Winters had made a big mark for himself in pop culture by playing the character called Mayhem for a series of ads for Allstate Insurance. Typically, Mayhem would cause accidents or otherwise destroy someone's property to reinforce how important it is to get insurance, to better protect yourselves from "Mayhem."

While other insurance company mascots like Flo from Progressive and the Geico gecko haven't gone anywhere, we haven't seen Winters bringing about mayhem in Allstate ads for a while. For those who always found Mayhem to be rather entertaining, thanks to Winters' perfect portrayal of the character, the good news is that he will be coming back. Per Fox Business, an Allstate spokesperson recently said that there's "still lots of Mayhem in the world, so he could pop in when you least expect it."

Dean Winters might be playing a character who enjoys bringing suffering to others, but in reality, the actor himself has been living in constant pain. In fact, as Winters tells Page Six, he nearly turned down accepting the Mayhem gig because of his condition. Twelve years ago, Winters contracted a bacterial infection that nearly killed him, literally stopping his heart for more than two minutes. After three weeks in the ICU and a month of recuperation, Winters developed gangrene, leading to a series of surgeries. Doctors had to amputate half of one thumb along with two toes, and he also needed skin grafts.

“I haven’t taken a step since 2009 without being in pain,” Winters says, revealing he has learned to live with the discomfort. “I’ve got neuropathy on, you know, on a whole different level where I can’t feel my hands and my feet. But if I stepped on a pebble, it’s like I go through the roof... It’s a very weird dichotomy. It’s like, it’s very hard to figure out. Nothing you can do about it. I’ve been sucking it up because, you know, the alternative is not a place where I want to be.”

It was when Winters was in the hospital for his tenth surgery when Allstate gave him the call to star in their insurance commercials. Understandably, the actor had no desire to get involved in such a physical role at that time. Ultimately, Winters gave in, noting that "Allstate was relentless."

“It’s crazy if you look in the Webster dictionary, the Old English definition of the word ‘mayhem’ is ‘one with amputations,'” Winters adds, seeing the irony in accepting the job. Additionally, the Oz alum has kept busy with other projects, as he was recently seen in the new holiday flick called Christmas vs. The Walters. He also plays Tiger King personality Jeff Lowe in an upcoming Joe Exotic series in the works at Peacock. He had a good reason for accepting that job, too.

“I took the job in hopes that people who hadn’t seen the documentary would just get really angry and just shut these zoos down because there’s no reason anyone should have any of these wild cats in their own possession,” Winters said. “It’s just horrible.”
