20th Century Fox announced today that production has started on Alvin and the Chipmunks 3D, the third film in this popular holiday franchise. The film is set to open on December 16th, 2011.

There are no plot details at this time, but it is suspected that most of the cast will return, including the popular Chipettes. The film will be competing with Steven Spielberg's The Adventure's of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn, which opens a week later on December 23rd.

In other 20th Century Fox scheduling news, the studio has moved the release date of Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps from April 21st to September 24th. The move was made so that Oliver Stone's sequel could be included in the Cannes Film Festival in May.
