While Netflix is going all-in on the Masters of The Universe franchise, with continued animated adventures and a live-action He-Man movie in the works, Amazon is bringing the muscle-man of Eternia’s sister She-Ra to life in a live-action series. While an animated reboot of the Princess of Power found an audience on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video announced their live-action series in September 2021. According to Variety, they have tapped HBO’s Watchmen and Westworld director Nicole Kassell to helm the pilot for what will be the first-ever live-action iteration of the character brought to screens.

There are currently no details known about how the story of the She-Ra series will look, and more importantly, whether it will take its inspiration from the original 1985 animated series or go down a similar route to the recent Netflix series, which stripped away all He-Man references and saw She-Ra going it alone under her own steam. As has been seen in the past, a lot of new shows and movies based on older franchises can live and die on how they connect with their existing fan base, so it will certainly be interesting to see which way Amazon decides to go with She-Ra.

In the original 80s series, She-Ra was the super-powered alter-ego of Princess Adora, the long-lost sister of Prince Adam, aka He-Man, who was kidnapped as a child by Hordak – the series’ Skeletor-like antagonist – who has brainwashed Adora to want to fight her brother. However, after being rescued from Hordak’s mind-control, Adora is reunited with her parents before returning to the place she calls home to fight against Hordak’s minions as the leader of the Great Rebellion. In the Netflix reboot, this story does remain partly intact, but Adora is an orphan and discovers her powers after stumbling on a magic sword that transforms her into She-Ra.

Masters of the Universe Anime Series Coming to Netflix, Will Continue 1980s Storylines

While a live-action return to screens has been on the cards for He-Man for many years, it is only in the last few months that the project seems to have gained traction. Thanks to the involvement of Netflix, it is now as close to being a certainty as any previous attempt, and this has been helped along by two completely different animated shows already being on the platform. With the Masters of the Universe being very much back in the room, now is the perfect time for Amazon’s live-action She-Ra series to capitalize on that popularity.

Netflix’s rebooted cartoon series made its debut in 2018 on Netflix and came to an end in 2020 after around 50 episodes across five seasons. Despite changing the origin of its title character, the show certainly didn’t suffer for it, with a 95% Rotten Tomatoes average score, with three of its five seasons landing 100% critic scores. With this in mind, it will be interesting to see whether Amazon’s version will include connections to He-Man like the 80s show or create a stand-alone heroine like Netflix’s reboot. Whichever route they take, She-Ra’s first foray into live-action is certainly going to gain a lot of interest from multiple generations.
