There are plenty of popular TV shows that get spin-offs. The Walking Dead is about to unleash a whole host of additional shows now following the conclusion of the flagship series later this year. New shows featuring the core characters of Negan, Maggie, Daryl, Rick, and Michonne all set to appear in new storylines, continuing their adventures beyond The Walking Dead. With these spin-offs joining Fear The Walking Dead and Tales of the Walking Dead, it could be easy to see why Walking Dead fatigue could settle in, especially with the latter seasons of the main series seeing dwindling viewer numbers. AMC President Dan McDermott doesn’t see that as an issue, though, and recently defended the number of additional shows coming soon.

The Walking Dead concludes this Fall after 11 seasons of zombie drama, but 2023 will seem like the series hasn’t ended at all but simply split its storylines into different branches. Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Negan and Lauren Cohen’s Maggie will head off to a zombie-infested New York in Dead City, Norman Reedus is getting his own spin-off as Daryl Dixon makes his way to France to seemingly pick up on story threads laid down by The Walking Dead: The World Beyond, and the newly announced series starring Andrew Lincoln and Danai Guiria as Rick and Michonne in a new story that will complete Rick’s story in place of the previously announced movies. While speaking to Entertainment Weekly, McDermott explained:

"We spend a lot of time focusing on how much is the right amount. The last couple years, we've had 16 episodes of The Walking Dead, 16 episodes of Fear of the Walking Dead, 10 episodes of Walking Dead: World Beyond. That's 42 episodes of television. That's a lot. Going forward, the Rick and Michonne show is six episodes. The Daryl Dixon show is going to be six episodes. The Maggie and Negan show is going to be six episodes. We have Tales of the Walking Dead. So you're actually going to see fewer hours of Walking Dead content on our platforms."

For many fans, the announcements of the coming spin-off series have effectively taken much of the jeopardy away from the finale of The Walking Dead. With many of the show’s main characters guaranteed to survive and head off into their respective series, any deaths that occur in the final episodes will not have the same impact as not knowing whether a fan-favorite character could meet a grisly end.

However, it is not known exactly how the Commonwealth storyline is going to end, and those who have stuck with the show through thick and thin will be tuning in to round out The Walking Dead for better or worse. How many of those viewers return for the spin-offs will likely determine how AMC approaches further Walking Dead shows. The Walking Dead returns to AMC for a final run of eight episodes on October 2.
