Breaking Bad franchise fans may not be sure what to do with themselves once the spinoff series Better Call Saul wraps up its run this summer, but we may not have seen the last of this television universe just yet. As it stands, there are no current plans for another series set in the Breaking Bad universe. This is in contrast to when Breaking Bad finished its own run, as there were plans already in motion for the story to be expanded upon with Better Call Saul at that time.
While nothing is on the board, fans shouldn't count out another series. In a new interview with Variety, Dan McDermott, president of entertainment and AMC Studios at AMC Networks, touched on the status of the Breaking Bad franchise. McDermott says that AMC has left the door wide open for another series. It's just a matter of getting Better Call Saul creators Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould on board, and as McDermott explains, the ball is currently in their court.
“I can tell you that if I could do anything to encourage Vince and Peter to continue on in this universe, I would do it. I think you’d have to ask THEM, but the door is always open and I long for the day my phone rings and Vince, Peter or our friends at Sony call to say, ‘Hey, I think we have another show set in this universe.'”
Wisely, the brass at AMC would not be interested in moving forward in this world without Gilligan and Gould involved. Now it just depends upon the two finding an interest in continuing the story, and as Gilligan and Gould can be perfectionists, the potential third series will likely be stalled until the pair come up with a solid idea that manages to excite them both.
Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul Might Get a Follow-Up Series, But Not Anytime Soon
Kim Wexler actress Rhea Seehorn has touched on the possibility of getting her own spinoff, as this is something that's come up a lot with fans. Seehorn has explained that a Kim series could theoretically happen, as Gilligan and Gould have named her as someone who has more story to tell beyond what's been seen in Better Call Saul. She also said that the two are both working on other projects for now, so a new series in this universe probably won't be happening anytime soon.
"You know, Peter and Vince have said publicly that though they feel that there are stories, mine included, that are worthwhile to continue to tell, that they do want to step away from this franchise for a beat," Seehorn told Deadline. "So that’s all I can say about that. You’d have to ask them for specifics beyond that. Nobody is being coy about anything, but I’m also very grateful that they and fans feel like there is an ellipse to who Kim is and who Kim was."
AMC will still have some key talent from Better Call Saul sticking around after the series ends. Bob Odenkirk has already signed on to star in a new dramedy series for the network dubbed Straight Man while Giancarlo Esposito is attached to a new adaptation of The Driver. Fans can also check out Rhea Seehorn in the short-form comedy series Cooper's Bar on AMC+.
