Universal is negotiating to turn the Broadway musical American Idiot into a feature film.

Dustin Lance Black will pen the script with the musical's original director, Michael Mayer, helming.

The musical is an adaptation of the punk rock band Green Day's album of the same name, and centers on Johnny, a disaffected youth who flees stifling suburbia and his parents' restrictions to look for meaning in his life, and to try out the freedom and excitement of the city.

Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, who also produced Mamma Mia! for Universal, optioned the musical prior to its opening day last spring through their Playtone Pictures.

No production date has been set.
