The story is based on Ted Chiang's short story, which was adapted by Eric Heisserer (The Thing, Final Destination 5), centering on a linguist (Amy Adams) who is recruited by the government, after alien spacecraft start to appear all over the world. She must try to determine whether these extraterrestrials come in peace, or if they mean to do us harm. As she begins to communicate with them, the linguist experiences flashbacks that help unlock the mystery of why they are really here.
FilmNation, which acquired the project back in 2012, is producing and financing the project alongside Lava Bear. Shawn Levy and Dan Levine are producing through their 21 Laps Entertainment company. No production schedule has been given at this time.
Amy Adams will next be seen in Big Eyes and she starts production this spring on the highly-anticipated Batman Vs. Superman, reprising her Lois Lane role from last year's Man of Steel, another woman who communicates with an alien.
