Amy Adams is joining Francis McDormand the romantic period tale, Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day for Focus Features.

In the film, set in 1939, Adams will portray an American songbird who befriends a dowdy governess (McDormand) sent to her home by mistake. Variety notes it's based on Winifred Watson's novel, and written by Simon Beaufoy and David Magee.

Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day will begin filming in the U.K. this week; Bharat Nalluri is directing.
