It looks like Adam McKay has an idea for Anchorman 3, but can it really happen? Adam McKay and Will Ferrell re-teamed for Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues in 2013, but the movie didn't quite meet the expectations of many fans. Still, there's been little bits of talk here and there of another installment in the comedy franchise and now, McKay reveals that he actually has an idea for Anchorman 3 that's based on the Iraq wars.

During a recent interview, director Adam McKay, who has shifted his focus away from comedy a bit in recent years, working on movies like The Big Short and the upcoming Dick Cheney biopic, revealed that he actually has an idea for Anchorman 3. He wouldn't reveal too much about the idea, but gave "a little half sentence" in regards to what the movie would be. Here's what he had to say about it.

"I can give you like a little half sentence. I don't know if you remember the first and even the second Iraq war. Maybe it was mainly the second Iraq war. They embedded journalists and that gave us kind of a whole story idea... I don't want to say too much, but I'll just tell you that embedded journalist, Ron Burgundy, Veronica Corningstone, the news team. That definitely gave us a big idea."

So basically, Anchorman 3 would see the news team embedded in a war zone. That would certainly be quite a bit different from anything we've seen in either of the first two Anchorman movies and could make for a comedy that has the opportunity for some social commentary as well. That seems to be the type of thing Adam McKay is interested in these days, which could give this a better shot at happening than we previously thought. In 2014, McKay seemed dead set against the idea of ever making another Anchorman movie. Here's what he had to say in an interview with Empire at the time.

"It's done. I think that's it. It was great to do it and it was so fun to work with those guys again, but I think that's it for Ron Burgundy. No, that's the last sequel we're gonna do. There's nothing more fun to me than new characters and a new world. And now we're releasing this alt version, we're totally satisfied. No Anchorman 3...I'm going to say definitely no. I'll actually say it in this case!"

While we still could be a long way off from seeing Anchorman 3 actually happen, it sounds like Adam McKay is much more open to the idea now and has a relatively solid idea. Will Ferrell has said, "never say never" in regards to revisiting the role of Ron Burgundy, saying that it might be fun to see those characters 10 years from now when they're much older. For now, it's just an idea, so don't get your hopes up, but we may yet see Brick, Champ, Brian, Veronica and Ron back in action.Cinema Blend first reported this.
