Peloton is doing its best to assure customers that their exercise bikes are safe after one was included in a shocking scene in the premiere episode of And Just Like That..., HBO Max's Sex and the City revival series. Hitting the ground running, the new series kicks off by writing a main character out of the franchise in a most peculiar way. Because we'll be talking about this scene and revealing which character is killed off in the premiere, be warned that there are MAJOR SPOILERS BELOW.

From the start of the show's production, it was clear that Kim Cattrall would not be returning as Samantha Jones. Because the character had such a strong presence in Sex and the City, there had been speculation that she might be killed off as a way of moving on without Samantha as a part of the story. This is something that often happens with other television show revivals, including the recent Turner & Hooch series at Disney+ which revealed Tom Hanks' character from the original movie had died off-screen.

With that being said, one might be led to believe that Samantha would be the one to die in And Just Like That... if there was going to be anyone to go. Shockingly, the writers went in a completely different direction. In the revival, Chris Noth returns as John Big, the longtime lover of Sarah Jessica Parker's Carrie Bradshaw. In the premiere episode, Big is at home exercising on a Peloton bike when he suddenly suffers a heart attack. Carrie comes back home just in time for her husband to die in her arms, making her a widow and ensuring this revival will be a lot different than the previous series, at least regarding Carrie's love life.

According to Buzzfeed News, Peloton knew that their exercise bike would be featured in the first episode of And Just Like That..., but they weren't told specifically what was going to happen with it. It then came as a total surprise when a major character died while using a Peloton, and it's now put the company in damage control mode. Suzanne Steinbaum of Peloton's health and safety council has released a statement suggesting that the fictional character's death was because of his unhealthy lifestyle and NOT because he was a Peloton user.

"I'm sure SATC fans, like me, are saddened by the news that Mr. Big dies of a heart attack. Mr. Big lived what many would call an extravagant lifestyle — including cocktails, cigars, and big steaks — and was at serious risk as he had a previous cardiac event in Season 6. These lifestyle choices and perhaps even his family history, which often is a significant factor, were the likely cause of his death. Riding his Peloton Bike may have even helped delay his cardiac event."

It may seem odd that Peloton needed to put out a statement like this, but the episode has in fact negatively affected the company. Per TMZ, its stock price has dipped by $11 after the death scene from the show was revealed. What's not helping is the reactions from fans, with many feeling amused by having Mr. Big die this way, resulting in a lot of comments on social media associating death with Peloton.

As for Samantha, the character still is alive and well in the Sex and the City universe, even if we're not going to see her in the flesh. The characters, through dialogue, reveal that Samantha has moved to London, though Miranda notes that it's "kind of like she's dead" as they no longer speak to her. Mirroring the break the actress made from the others in real life, Carrie explains that Samantha "fired me as a friend" once Carrie no longer needed Samantha's PR services.

"Well, what is there to say?" Carrie says in the episode. "I told her that, you know, because of what the book business is now, it just didn’t make sense for me to keep her on as a publicist. She said, ‘Fine,’ and then fired me as a friend. I kept leaving her voicemails, asking her to please call me back, so we could talk about this and fix it. Look, I understand that she was upset, but I thought I was more to her than an ATM."

And Just Like That... is streaming on HBO Max.
