Star Wars series Andor’s first trailer has arrived to bring look at the much anticipated prequel series to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Diego Luna returns to the Star Wars franchise to reprise his Rogue One role as Cassian Andor in a story that will start five years before the events of the popular movie. In the show, Andor is a thief who becomes a spy in the early days of the Rebellion against the Galactic Empire. Of course we know already where Andor’s journey ends, but it is time to find out more about how it began.

Along with many other Star Wars treats released today, the first footage of Andor promises another rip-roaring adventure that could well stand up alongside The Mandalorian as a fan favorite series. Like many of the recent releases, the show will fill a previously void gap in the history of Star Wars just like Obi-Wan Kenobi and the upcoming Ahsoka. With the series having wrapped filming last year, fans have been waiting a long time to see the first footage from the series, and you can watch the trailer below.

There are plenty of teases in the footage, but there is still a lot of mystery surrounding the series, which has been promised by showrunner Tony Gilroy to take the franchise in some exciting new directions and is certainly going to be an informative addition to the franchise. This would bring the series in line with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which was something very different to the other Star Wars movies and gained a lot of praise from fans for trying something new that didn’t rely on a Skywalker to tell its story.

It was revealed in a recent interview with Vanity Fair that there was probably a lot more to come from Andor, and that was proved with an announcement today that a second season of twelve episodes has been given the green light and will conclude the series with a lead into Rogue One. Speaking to the magazine, showrunner Gilroy explained about what story the upcoming episodes will tell. He said:

“This guy gave his life for the galaxy, right? I mean, he consciously, soberly, without vanity or recognition, sacrificed himself. Who does that? That’s what this first season is about. It’s about him being really revolution-averse, and cynical, and lost, and kind of a mess. His adopted home will become the base of our whole first season, and we watch that place become radicalized. Then we see another planet that’s completely taken apart in a colonial kind of way. The Empire is expanding rapidly. They’re wiping out anybody who’s in their way.”

Andor’s first season will kick off on Disney+ with a double episode on August 31. With 12 episodes, the series will fill a sizable hole in the calendar to help keep fans occupied before the return of The Mandalorian’s third season in February 2023.
