There was no way that Spider-Man: No Way Home was going to give audiences three Spider-Men, and not give the world a live-action version of that pointing meme. So when the photo of Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire finally landed with the reveal of the movie’s Blu-ray and other home media release date it was an instant hit with fans. While speaking to Entertainment Tonight at the SAG awards, Andrew Garfield explained a little more about how the moment to put together the shot everyone wanted came about.

Spider-Man: No Way Home swung into cinemas in December last year with very high expectations, and it managed to deliver on pretty much all of them. It gave audiences three generations of Spider-Man, a plethora of villains from across multiple universes, and it brought more tragedy than Shakespeare, but along with all of that, the one thing fans needed to see were three men in Spider-Man costumes pointing at each other to make life complete. While Sony held off using Maguire and Garfield in any promotional material, even after the movie’s release in cinemas, with the film heading to home media they decided it was time to make the most of it.

Garfield was asked whether it was anyone’s decision to recreate the meme, and the actor was quick to admit that it was something that always seemed bound to happen. However, the novelty of the moment meant that they may not have been able to pull the image off at all, considering Garfield said that they were “cracking up so much” he believed there could have only been “one good shot.” He said:

"Oh, no, it was always gonna happen. I think everyone was like, 'How do we do the meme? How do we do the meme?' So before we shot anything, we just did a photoshoot of the three of us pointing at each other. And I knew they must've got one good shot, because we were all just cracking up so much. We couldn't quite contain ourselves."

While the appearance of three Spider-Man stars on screen together was something special from Marvel, any plans for a reunion or even another appearance by any of them is something that everyone is keeping quiet about. Having originally been open to a return, Garfield is now once again denying that he knows anything at all about whether he could or could not appear again as Spider-Man.

While Tom Holland’s Spider-Man seems certain to be back again at some point, there are many rumors about both Garfield and Maguire’s possible inclusion in other movies, such as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Morbius. With both actors originally appearing in Sony-owned movies, there is no doubt that one or both of them could be used in Sony’s growing universe, but with multiverse variants being a big thing for Marvel at the moment, it is hard to rule out seeing either of them again in the MCU as well.
