The Walking Dead might have ended last year after eleven seasons, but the story continues with a handful of spinoffs that are currently in production. Among them is a limited series that stars Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira with the two reprising their respective roles as zombie apocalypse survivors Rick Grimes and Michonne. The two characters were among those lucky enough to make it to the end of The Walking Dead alive, but they're not out of danger just yet. Whether they will also survive the spinoff remains to be seen, but the idea of the new series is to help effectively wrap up both of their character arcs.

Production is currently underway on the spinoff, and Gurira shared a new photo from the set to Instagram. The image showcases Lincoln as Rick, and while this is no surprise at all, he has blood splattered across his face. Chances are that's not Rick's blood, given how much fans have already seen him spill in the past, but as he's lost plenty of his own as well, anything is possible. In any case, this would suggest that the spinoff series won't be a walk in the park for Rick, but at least he'll be reunited with his old flame.

"Have you seen this man?" Gurira wrote in the caption, adding the hashtags #TheWalkingDead and #Richonne.

Danai Gurira had a lot of involvement behind the scenes in addition to returning as Michonne. She had written the series with Scott M. Gimple with the two both executive producing alongside Andrew Lincoln. Gimple also serves as showrunner of the series, which is set to wrap filming by May. The plan at this time is for the spinoff, which has yet to be given its official title, to premiere on AMC sometime in 2024.

"There's a spinoff that is coming out that we're in pre-production," Gurira told Deadline last year. "I co-created it with Scott Gimple and [Andrew] Lincoln, and we're having a great time. It's a lot of work though, a lot of work. Well it's an epic love story. It's a love story between Rick and Michonne, as we know that they were together and got separated. So this is that story, that journey between the two of them with a very raging world around them."

There are other spinoffs that will be developed as well. Norman Reedus will continue on as Daryl Dixon in a separate series that puts the character in Europe to encounter all-new survivors and locations. The Walking Dead: Dead City will also send Maggie and Negan to New York with Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan reprising the roles. Meanwhile, the first spinoff series, Fear the Walking Dead, is set to conclude later this year after eight seasons.
