Jared Leto is set to take on another iconic character, but this time, unlike The Joker, it is someone from the real world. The Oscar winner is set to play famed artist Andy Warhol in a biopic, which he is also going to produce. Oscar-nominated producer Michael De Luca is attached to produce the movie alongside Jared Leto.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news about the movie, which will simply be called Warhol. While Jared Leto playing Andy Warhol on its own is enough to make almost any movie fan interested, the project has also scooped up Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter to pen the screenplay for the movie. He will be using Victor Bockris' 1989 book, Warhol: The Biography, as a starting point. Winter also wrote the screenplay for The Wolf of Wall Street, if you needed some more convincing that this project has some serious potential.

Michael De Luca and Jared Leto jointly acquired the rights to the book that the movie will be based off of. According to the report, the pair has wanted to work together for quite some time now and this was the opportunity they had been waiting for. What's more is that the movie will not be a small, quiet indie. Instead, the creative team wants to make it into a strong, mainstream project, De Luca has a lot of experience bringing real life stories to the big screen on a large scale. His previous work includes The Social Network, Captain Phillips and Moneyball, all of which told real life tales and had very mass appeal.

While there hasn't been a definitive Andy Warhol biopic made, it seems like the movie was waiting for Jared Leto, who feels like he was tailor-made for the part. Warhol came to prominence in the art world in the 1960s with his iconic pop art, like that painting of the Campbell's soup cans, that turned everyday objects and celebrities into art. He was also openly gay long before that was an accepted thing and his artist workshop The Factory was an iconic staple of New York society in the 60s. Warhol has been described as a very eccentric person who could be cold and shallow, but also undeniably brilliant. Given what Leto was able to do in Dallas Buyers Club, which he won an Oscar for, it seems like he should be able to turn in another really dynamic performance given the source material he will have to work with.

Jared Leto was most recently seen as The Joker in Suicide Squad and he is currently filming for the Blade Runner sequel. The project has yet to attach a director, nor has it secured distribution, but with the talent involved, it should easily find a suitor. There is also no word on an anticipated timeline for the project, but we will be sure to keep you updated as more details become available.
