Marvel Studios have released a new retrospect of the history of Ant-Man from Brazil Comic Con. Charting the journey of Paul Rudd’s size-changing hero from his earliest encounter with Hank Pym and the Ant-Man suit to his newest challenge facing Kang the Conqueror, the video highlights Scott Lang’s story ahead of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

While the special look is mostly footage we have seen before, the montage ends with a threat from Kang when he tells Lang, “Your reality, everything you’re holding onto, I know how it ends. You’re out of your league, Ant-Man.” Although this does not expand much on the threat we already know that Kang poses to the Marvel multiverse, it is still a chilling portent of exactly what challenge awaits both Ant-Man and his fellow Avengers.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is described by Marvel Studios with this synopsis:

"In the film, which officially kicks off phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Super-Hero partners Scott Lang and Hope Van Dyne return to continue their adventures as Ant-Man and the Wasp. Together, with Hope's parents Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne, the family finds themselves exploring the Quantum Realm, interacting with strange new creatures and embarking on an adventure that will push them beyond the limits of what they thought was possible."

It is clear that Kang the Conqueror will not be any pushover. On the contrary, his multiple reported appearances over the coming phase are expected to bring more and more powerful versions of the character to the MCU. However, with everything building to Phase 6’s Avengers: Secret Wars, while Kang is always going to be a dominant force, Quantumania will not see him easily being defeated and set aside in the movie, which could spell trouble for Scott and his fellow Quantum Realm travelers.

So far, the multiverse has been slowly developed over a number of MCU TV shows and movies. Loki introduced one of the most benign versions of Kang we are likely to see, and seemingly set the breaking of the multiverse in motion. Films such as Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness have continued to slowly peel back the possibilities of the multiverse as well as its dangers.

As we head into 2023, there are plenty more multiverse adventures to come, including Loki season 2, which could see another version of Kang being revealed in the new world in which the God of Mischief found himself at the end of his first season. So far, the multiverse has not quite been delivered in the way fans have wanted, but patience usually pays off, and over the next few years it looks like there are corners of the multiverse going to be explored that no one expected. As the MCU goes deeper into the Multiverse Saga, there is no doubt that Kang’s presence will be felt more and more.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will be released in cinemas on February 17, 2023.
