Antonio Banderas is set to star in Patricia Riggen's upcoming dramatization of the 2010 Chilean mine cave-in The 33.

The miners spent 69 days trapped underground, while workers on the surface worked around-the-clock the rescue them. Antonio Banderas will be portraying Mario Sepulveda, the charismatic miner also known as Super Mario. Martin Sheen and Rodrigo Santoro are also attached to star.

Patricia Riggen is directing from a script by Mikko Alanne and Jose Rivera. Mike Medavoy, who announced the casting Sunday at Cannes, is producing alongside Edward McGurn.

Antonio Banderas will next be seen in Robert Rodriguez's sequel Machete Kills.

Production is scheduled to begin in the fall in Chile.
