Antonio Banderas (Zorro), has signed on to take on the role of Hernan Cortez in the new film, Conquistador.

The Hollywood Reporter says the epic will follow the 16th Century Spanish warrior and his soldiers in their quest to take over Mexico and expand the Spanish Empire.

Brazilian director, Andrucha Waddington will helm the project, written by Nicholas Kazan (Reversal of Fortune).

The production will head to Mexico, South America, and Spain and will begin shooting in September; Conquistador has a 2007 release.
