Apple and its original films division is re-releasing CODA next weekend for free. Each free screening will also feature open captions to be fully accessible to the deaf and hard-of-hearing communities. This information is being reported by Deadline.

CODA has been a massive success story for Apple as it is currently nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. In addition, it also received nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor for Troy Kotsur. The film premiered on Apple TV+ and in theaters globally last August and has now become the first Best Picture nominee that features a mostly deaf cast. Kotsur is also the first deaf male actor to be nominated for Best Picture.

CODA stars Emilia Jones as Ruby, a teenage girl who is the only hearing member of her family. She finds a love for singing through her chorus class and is pushed to pursue it by her teacher (Eugenio Derbez). However, her family runs a fishing business and needs Ruby as their main communicator. Ruby finds herself torn between her own ambitions and the loyalty she feels towards her family. CODA also stars Marlee Matlin, Daniel Durant, Ferdia Walsh-Peelo, Amy Forsyth, and Kevin Chapman.

The film premiered at the 2021 virtual Sundance and swept the main prizes; earning Special Jury Award for Ensemble Cast, the Directing Award, the Audience Award, and the Grand Jury Prize. It also set a festival record when Apple acquired it for $25 million. In a time when many Oscar films are dramatic downers, CODA is an inspiring story about a family that truly loves one another, despite their different aspirations.

“Every so often, a film comes along that strikes a deep emotional chord for audiences who celebrate its win for humanity,” said Matt Dentler, Apple’s Head of Features. “CODA does just that. Siân and the amazing cast and crew of ‘CODA’ gave the world a gift with this film, and we are inspired to pass this gift on.”

The upcoming limited theatrical release will take place in major cities all across the U.S. and in London. There will be three daily show times that will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis. In Los Angeles, audiences will have an opportunity to participate in a live Q&A with the cast and writer/director Sian Heder.

The Academy Awards take place on March 27 and Apple is giving CODA the final push for audiences to go see it and root it for during the ceremony.
