Have you ever had a friend or family member get into a relationship with someone you think is the worst? It's always an awkward position to be in because you want to figure out how to get rid of this unwelcome addition to your life without hurting the person you care about. What lengths would you go to end this romantic partnership? Do you intentionally sabotage things, or do you grit your teeth and bear it? How awful would this person have to be before you started to consider violence to be an acceptable solution? These seem to be the questions that are being asked by the new show from TV veteran Sharon Horgan.

Apple TV recently debuted the trailer for Bad Sisters, which is the first production that has emerged from the company's first look deal with Horgan. The teaser sets up an intriguing familial murder mystery that will also manage to find humor along the way. Thankfully, we won't have to wait long for more as the show is set to premiere its first two episodes in August. Before the show begins, let's take a moment to discuss what we know about it so far, along with the career of its award-winning creator, Sharon Horgan.

Bad Sisters: The Plot

Bad Sisters will tell the story of the Garvey sisters, who are under investigation by the life insurance company of their recently deceased brother-in-law. The investigators are trying to prove that his death was caused by malicious intent as all the sisters seem to have major issues with their sister's husband. The show's official synopsis reads:

The Garvey sisters are bound together by the premature deaths of their parents and the promises they made to always protect one another.

Bad Sisters is based on the Flemish show Clan, but it is unclear how much the adaptation will stick to the source material. It's a unique premise that seems perfectly suited for Horgan's gift of combining comedy and drama in a way that allows both to thrive.

The Garvey sisters are played by Sharon Horgan, Anne-Marie Duff (His Dark Materials), Eva Birthistle (Fate: The Winx Saga), Sarah Greene (Normal People), and Eve Hewson (Robin Hood). Claes Bang (The Northman) plays the late husband in flashbacks. The characters working to find the truth are played by Daryl McCormack (The Wheel of Time) and Brian Gleeson (Peaky Blinders).

Chances are audiences have seen something Sharon Horgan had a hand in creating. The Irish actress, writer, and director has worked an absurd amount over her career, first gaining critical acclaim in the UK for her BBC Three show, Pulling, which aired from 2006–2009. In the States, she is probably best known for the show she created with the comedian Rob Delaney, Catastrophe, which was on Amazon Prime on this side of the Atlantic, in addition to HBO's Divorce. She can also be seen in IFC's The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (2022), Hulu's This Way Up, Game Night (2018), and many other movies and shows. Somehow, she also finds time to voice characters in multiple animated series such as BoJack Horseman, Adventure Time, and Bob's Burgers.

Sharon Horgan has proven herself many times over to be one of the most entertaining and hardest working creatives in television working today. Few people are as accomplished as she is at either writing or acting, so it is just astounding that she has done so much high-quality work in both fields. A new project from Horgan is always worth a watch.

In a recent interview with NME, Horgan revealed that the legendary musician, PJ Harvey, was behind the show's theme. Horgan told NME that she "knew that [PJ Harvey] had started doing scores" and that she was "just a huge long-term fan,” so she reached out to her. Harvey, the artist behind multiple classic albums from the past three decades like Rid of Me, Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea, and Let England Shake, covered the song "Who by Fire" by Leonard Cohen for Bad Sisters.

As Horgan mentioned, this is far from the first time Harvey's work has been a part of a film or television series, as she was the composer for Shane Meadow's The Virtues. Some of her other music was heavily featured on the Peaky Blinders soundtrack. Fans of the alternative singer-songwriter will get to hear new pieces and older, previously unreleased material throughout the run of the dark comedy.

Premiere Date

Bad Sisters' first two episodes are set to premiere on Apple TV+ on August 19, 2022. Following the premiere, a new episode will land on the streaming service weekly every Friday through October 14, 2022.
