Aquaman is just one of the many future DC comic superheroes who has been given a guest appearance (or several) in Smallville. AC, as he was known on the show, first appeared in the show's fifth season as a young man able to do amazing things in the water. The episode proved to be highly popular, and so the producers of Smallville chose to put together a pilot for a show starring Aquaman, known at the time as Mercy Reef. After the merger between the WB network and UPN to form the new CW network, Mercy Reef was placed on the chopping block, and so the series was never produced.

However, fans of Aquaman can rejoice. According to TV Shows on DVD, the pilot episode for Mercy Reef is now going to be included with specially marked season sets of Smallville as a Best Buy exclusive.

Of special note to fans of Smallville is the fact that Mercy Reef featured a different actor playing AC. When AC made his appearances on Smallville he was played by Alan Ritchson. But the AC of Mercy Reef was a different version of the character, and was portrayed by Justin Hartley - who would later go on to feature in numerous episodes of Season Six of Smallville as Oliver Queen, a.k.a. Green Arrow. Later on in Season Six, Hartley would appear alongside Ritchson in the highly acclaimed episode Justice.

Mercy Reef enjoyed brisk sales on iTunes in the wake of its cancellation. The hour-long pilot stars Justin Hartley, Lou Diamond Phillips (Young Guns), Ving Rhames (Pulp Fiction), Adrianne Palicki (Friday Night Lights) and Rick Peters (Heroes).
