Ariana DeBose has won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in West Side Story as the impassioned, culturally significant and emotionally arresting Anita. Stunning audiences in a gorgeous red suit and flowing cape, DeBose delivered an emotional, impactful and inspirational speech directed at young women, particularly women of color and queer artists. Through profound joy and tears, DeBose spoke frankly and candidly about her identity as a queer Afro-Latina woman:

"You see an openly queer woman of color, an Afro-Latina who found her strength and life through art...if anyone has ever questioned your identity, I promise you this, there is indeed a place for us."

DeBose's portrayal of the native Puerto Rican woman Anita and her win as the first openly queer afro Latina actress are history making. DeBose originally comes from Broadway, and she brought her star power and abilities to shine under the stage lights straight to Hollywood in Steven Spielberg's epic adaptation of the world renown musical. She was originally hesitant to participate in the project, not having much confidence in her acting abilities as much as in her singing and dancing talents.

Despite her concerns, DeBose's audition was too good for the casting directors to pass up, and she was eventually compelled to take the role. Her powerful, tear-jerking and inspiring performance in the film and embodiment of the spirited Anita addresses previous concerns about lack of accurate and empowering representation. Still, her acceptance speech tonight might have been as powerful as her performance in the movie. Both open the door for women everywhere as DeBose is solidified as a pillar and as an example for rising women in all professions and all corners of the world.

"Even in this weary world we live in," DeBose said, "dreams do come true."

She also spoke to her childhood self, in an emotionally impactful plea to women who either dream big, or just want to know where they fit in, to be strong, and see the endless possibilities in their futures.
