Arnold Schwarzenegger celebrates his 75th birthday today, and with several films in the works he is showing no signs of slowing yet. From his first appearance in 1970’s Hercules in New York to his upcoming return as Conan the Barbarian, Schwarzenegger has become synonymous with big action blockbusters, but has also found time to work in a few comedy gems as well, including the likes of Kindergarten Cop and Twins. As the internet celebrated the actor’s milestone birthday, it was a good chance for many to remember their favorite moments from the former Governor of California.

Having been a weightlifter since the age of 15, it was not surprising that Schwarzenegger progressed into various strongman contests very quickly, and won his Mr Universe title by the time he was 20 and added several Mr Olympia titles to it, leading him to be called the greatest bodybuilder of all time by some. After appearing in the documentary Pumping Iron in 1977, Schwarzenegger soon turned his attention to acting, retiring from bodybuilding and soon finding fame as a star of Hollywood action movies, with his first big breakthrough coming from 1982’s Conan the Barbarian.

Having gone on to be the face of the Terminator franchise, as well as appearing in a huge array of action hits such as Commando, Predator, Total Recall and Red Heat, Schwarzenegger’s popularity soared throughout the 1980s and along with Sylvester Stallone he became one of the go-to stars of the era for anything that involved explosions, guns and broken bones.

In a career twist that could have been written for one of his movies, Schwarzenegger became Governor of California in 2003 in a special recall election to replace Gray Davis. After securing 48.6% of the vote, the actor ended 17 points ahead of his Democrat rival Cruz Bustamante, and served out the rest of Davis term before going for re-election 2006. In that election, Schwarzenegger managed to increase his vote share to almost 56%, and served his full term until 2011, when he returned to acting.

On returning to the industry, Schwarzenegger wasted no time in getting back to what he does best. Having made an uncredited cameo in The Expendables, his first major role back in the saddle was in The Expendables 2 in 2012. Over the following decade, the movies continued to come thick and fast, with two returns to the Terminator franchise, another Expendables appearance and his upcoming movie Kung Fury 2.

Schwarzenegger also has had a decent list of comedy roles, which he will soon be adding to when he reunites with Danny DeVito on Twins sequel, Triplets, and he also provided a voice over for DeVito’s upcoming adult animation Little Demon.
