The upcoming 2021 Arrowverse crossover event between Batwoman and Superman & Lois is no longer happening. The ongoing public health crisis is the reason for the cancellation of the highly anticipated event. No major Arrowverse crossover will happen in 2021, which DC fans will likely find to be disappointing. Fans were looking forward to seeing Ryan Wilder (Javicia Leslie) meet up in the world of Superman & Lois.

Batwoman showrunner Caroline Dries revealed that the 2021 Arrowverse event between Batwoman and Superman & Lois was canceled in a new interview. "We're not really able to cross over because physically, we can't cross crews due to the fear of exposure to COVID," says Dries. If that wasn't enough, there was a planned crossover with Supergirl, which has also been scrapped. Dries continues, "So, if Supergirl weren't ending this year, I would say there would be more of a possibility. But I'm afraid that at least this year, we're not going to be able to tap into that dynamic."

This is just the latest setback for the DC TV shows. Batwoman was forced to cut its season short because of the pandemic last year. The Flash had to shut down after multiple crew members tested positive. The 2021 Arrowverse event would have been the first time that Javicia Leslie's Ryan Wilder would have been introduced to the larger DC TV universe. Back in May 2020, CW president Mark Pedowitz stated that they were aiming to tone things down after the massive Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event and were instead developing a two-hour crossover with Batwoman and Superman & Lois.

Javicia Leslie was hoping for another crossover to occur this year, which also will not be happening. "I'm so heartbroken about the COVID situation because I know that it's Black Lightning's last season," she said. She continued, "I would have loved to do a crossover with them. Nafessa [Williams] and Jordan [Calloway] are really good friends of mine, and it would have been great to play with them and be superheroes all on the same show. That would have been epic." The public health crisis has put a stop to a lot of productions, so it's really fortunate that any of these shows are happening at all with new episodes.

Scheduling for a traditional Arrowverse crossover event is incredibly difficult. So, throwing a pandemic into the mix does not help matters at all. Combining casts and crews also sees a lot of extra people on the set, when it has been advised to stay away from large gatherings. In the end, it just sounds like a logistical nightmare to set up the crossover event between Batwoman and Superman & Lois. Maybe things will be able to happen later, but for now, fans will not be seeing a 2021 Arrowverse event. Entertainment Weekly was one of the first outlets to announce that the 2021 Arrowverse event is no longer happening.
