Atlanta was highly praised when it first made its debut, and the show continues to gain fans even after its long-awaited return. Atlanta has earned two Emmys for Donald Glover for lead actor in a comedy and a directing prize for its creator, writer, and star. The directing win was the first for a Black director of a comedy. However, Atlanta’s end is officially in sight.

FX CEO John Landgraf revealed Thursday during his time at the Television Critics Association’s (virtual) winter press tour that the previously announced fourth season of Donald Glover’s Emmy-winning comedy will be its last. He also noted the final two seasons have already been filmed.

The decision to end the series comes as no surprise to most as Glover departed his deal with Disney-backed FX last year in favor of a new pact with Amazon. The third season will debut on March 24th, 2022, followed by the final run in the fall. Glover had finished his obligations to the series so far.

“To be honest, I kind of wanted it to end after season two,” Glover explained. The actor, however, did state that wrapping the series with season four felt like the natural conclusion for Earn Marks, Alfred “Paper Boi” Miles, and the other characters. “When the conditions are right for something to happen, it happens, and when they’re not, it doesn’t,” said Glover. “The story was always supposed to be what it was.”

Glover has already been at work at Amazon, setting an adaptation of Brad Pitt-Angelina Jolie feature Mr. and Mrs. Smith. The series was due this year, but changes in the cast have set the show back. In September, the Hollywood Reporter exclusively reported that the role will be recast as insiders noted that Amazon still has high hopes to debut the show in 2022. Glover is also working on a music series for Amazon called Hive. However, Amazon has yet to confirm the show. Glover also said that he’d be open to revisiting Atlanta in the future, “if there’s a reason to do it, but it always depends. I like keeping options open.”

FX and Glover filmed both seasons three and four back-to-back with the idea of returning the comedy to the air as soon as possible. The series last aired in May 2018. The new season is everything you’ve come to expect from Atlanta,” Landgraf told reporters Thursday. Season 3 drops its premiere episode on March 24th on Hulu.
